Cava del Prainito

General description of the valley
Prainito quarry, located in the Municipalities of Modica and Rosolini, is within the catchment area of the river Tellaro and forms a left tributary. Starting from Contrada Favarotta up to the confluence with the Tellaro, the valley stretches in the range east longitude 14°52’40’ – 14°57’45” and in the north Latitude 36°54’10” – 36°52’13”. The high valley is bordered in the north-eastern part by the areal of Contrada Favarotta, Campisi, Monte Grotte, Prainito, and in the southwestern part by the areal of c.da Favarottella, Cammaratini, Mandra Vecchia, B. della Gisira. It stretches for about 13 km, with trends roughly north-west / south-east, starting from Contrada Favarotta at an altitude of about 315 m above sea level, then gradually deepening until it goes into the valley of the Tellaro River at an altitude of about 90 m above sea level.

Description of the way
Coming from Ispica along the SS. 115, go past Rosolini, after about 3 km, at the crossing Frigintini- Modica, turn left into SP.17 Ritillini-Favarotta. Coming from Siracusa, along the S.S.115 after Noto, about 3 km from Rosolini turn right at the crossing Frigintini -Modica along the S.P.17 Ritillini Favarotta. After about 7 km you will reach the Giasira Cellar. Here, you have to leave the car and go on foot. Take a municipal country lane on the left of the road. After about 800 m hairpin bends you will admire a lovely place rich of natural beauties, called Cava Paradiso. Along this route you can observe the natural singularities such as karren, solution tubs, karst sinkholes and more, as you can see in the attached map.
